Hmm, I haven't been up to too terribly much these past few days. A few weeks back I tried out for a play with UAA (I figured since I'm going to college there and minoring in theater it wouldn't hurt to get started on my rep.), I didn't get a part but I knew by the end of the audition session I wouldn't be getting one so I made it clear to the director that I'd be interested in helping out as a tech. He made some allusions to being a stage manager, possibly. I'm not the new SM, but I am the ASM (Assistant Stage Manager) and thank goodness, I've never managed before and I'm not certain I'm up for it quite yet. Rehearsals are every weeknight from 7-10, which could get a touch ugly when classes start in three weeks, oh well, hopefully either I can get out of it for those nights or I can work something out with the teacher.
Justin and I have been having fun, the past few nights we've stayed up late to argue Buddhism and reality. The first night we were up until 1 am (bad for him, he has class at 9:30) comparing my more paganistic views on individuality and the nature of the universe with his Buddhist perspectives. The night after that we didn't call it quits until a quarter to 2 am. I spent all of the following day thinking about god and my place in the universe. My head was so full of ramblings that when he IMed me (J: If it isn't my philosophical debate partner.) I asked for one night of less heady subjects, he got a little annoyed with me and although small talk wasn't as satisfying, it was exactly what I needed. I spent this afternoon with him and his friend Isaac; they're having an Indian themed weekend, jamming on makeshift instruments, cooking Indian food, etc. I felt bad because Justin kept talking/lecturing with me instead of paying attention to his friend. I can't remember why but we started talking about the 'Flying Dutchman' but he was shocked to learn that I had disliked it. His response was to put on a tape of an Opera, he had wanted us to watch Turnadot but it was missing so we went with La Boheme instead. I actually liked it, I'm surprised but the first half (all I've seen but he let me borrow it) was really fun, I adore the costumes, and the sets were fabulous. My main annoyances with 'Dutchman' either weren't in Boheme or else I didn't notice them. For one, the vibrato, though very present didn't even register as unpleasant. And for another, Dutchman bothered the heck out of me because everyone in it was so wretched and pathetic (Justin was flabbergasted at that "What about the Dutchman? How is he pathetic?" "Oh please, he was mechanical and you could almost feel him sucking up the happiness whenever he was on stage") in La Boheme, the first two acts anyway, everyone is so colorful and full of life, they might be down on their luck but at least they know how to live. Mmmm, Bed.
